Applying for Support

The Fletcher Trust is pleased to receive applications for assistance from groups working in the areas of education and youth development. There is no formal application form. Instead, organisations are invited to put their case for consideration forward in their own words. As The Trust meets quarterly, applicants can usually expect a prompt response.

Every application is treated on its merits, but The Trust's main aim is to support education and youth development programmes. In particular, applications for 'start-up' funding are welcome as The Trust recognises how difficult it can be to launch even the most worthwhile project.

The Trust accepts one application per 12 months from any organisation. If you do receive a grant, funds must be used within one year and evidence of this may be required. The Trust will not provide funds for national appeals or appeals by a second party, or for investment, salaries, wages, individuals or travel.

Details of the information we require and where to send it are below. However, if you feel that you do not qualify for assistance from The Fletcher Trust, we also have provided details of where else you can apply for funding.

How to apply

To give an application full consideration, The Trust needs some basic information. Your letter should cover the following:

Initial statement
This should tell us the name of your organisation, its objectives, membership numbers and a brief statement of its history and philosophy. A summary of your most recent annual audited accounts, current year's budget and any other material you feel is relevant will also assist us in making a decision.

Project description
In this section you should outline your overall plans and objectives and include a detailed budget. We need to know how much support that you seek from us, and how that funding will be used. If you have applied to other organisations for help, please tell us.

Future plans
If your project is ongoing, please outline your long-term plans, especially with regard to funding.

Where else to apply

There are three computer databases about funding sources managed by the Funding Information Service:

Fundview provides information for community groups in New Zealand. It includes funding schemes run by the Government, philanthropic, local government, statutory trusts, local trusts and service organisations. As well as via the website, access is available at most libraries and civic buildings throughout New Zealand. You can work through the extensive list of providers and identify whether your organisation is eligible for financial assistance.

Breakout is New Zealand's primary source of information on academic, sporting, industry and arts grants, scholarships and awards available to assist individuals. The database contains over 2000 awards, scholarships and grants that include undergraduate and postgraduate study, research, professional development and travel.

CorporateCitizens provides information as to sourcing funds from businesses offering sponsoship, volunteering, mentoring, gifts in kind, loans and other initiatives.

You could also try one of the philanthropic organisations listed on the Philanthropy New Zealand website.
